Frequently asked questions

What covers are available for dual chamber pits?

SVC offers a two-part galvanised steel cover compatible with our 1200x600 and 1200x900 Dual Chamber Pits. One side is a forgebar grate to be placed over the inlet chamber; the other side is the same forgebar grating covered by a 3mm solid chequer plate, to be oriented over the outlet chamber. The grate and cover combination is housed within a steel frame with tie bars to support encasement in concrete.

DCP covers are available in either Class B or Class C load ratings as per AS 3996:2019.

Can you make a custom-sized pipe grille?

Yes. In addition to our range of standard sizes designed to fit common pipe diameters, we can fabricate custom pipe grilles to suit unique or non-standard pit or outlet dimensions for your project. These can be made with access hatches as required.

Are SVC pipe grilles lockable?

SVC's standard pipe grilles are designed to be bolted directly over the pit or outlet, with no opening mechanism or allowance for access.

Custom pipe grilles for applications requiring maintenance access can be produced with hinged boltdown hatches, which secures them against unauthorised access while allowing authorised personnel to open them for maintenance.

Where are pipe grilles typically installed?

Pipe grilles are commonly used in Melbourne Water applications on overflow pits, where water overflow from ponds and catchments is redirected into the drainage system to prevent flooding.

They may also be installed over stormwater outlets at the discharge point where stormwater empties into a creek, river, or open drainage channel.

What kind of projects are dual chamber pits suitable for?

Dual Chamber Pits are ideal for smaller commercial sites and residential developments such as townhouse and dual occupancy construction projects, where on-site stormwater detention is necessary due to an increase in hard, non-absorbent surfaces on the site. This ensures that during heavy rain events, stormwater can be released slowly to mitigate flooding and pooling around council drains.

The filtration of sediments and debris also improves the quality of the discharged stormwater, helping to protect downstream waterways.

Is this a stormwater detention (OSD) system?

Yes, SVC's Dual Chamber Pit acts as a self-contained on-site stormwater detention system and can be a component of a broader OSD plan. Its primary function to capture and detain stormwater during heavy rain events, ensuring a controlled stormwater discharge rate that eases the pressure on municipal drainage infrastructure.

An additional benefit of the system is the improvement of water quality due to debris filtration measures incorporated within the unit.

What is the purpose of the two chambers?

The two chambers inside SVC's Dual Chamber Pit are designed for stormwater detention, enabling a controlled rate of stormwater discharge.

The first chamber (stormwater inlet) captures the stormwater and acts as a sediment trap, allowing coarse pollutants and silt to settle at the base. The water then passes through the trash grate and orifice plate in the central baffle, which provide further filtration, into the second chamber (outlet) where the stormwater is released at a more controlled rate.

How do you clean a trash grate?

Maintenance and cleaning of our trash grates is straightforward. The captured debris and litter remains on the surface of the grate, allowing maintenance crews to easily rake up or lift the contaminants out for efficient disposal.

Where are trash grates most commonly used?

Trash grates are commonly used in conjunction with orifice pits as part of a stormwater detention system, where they are installed over an orifice plate to prevent contaminants from entering the outlet chamber. Trash grates can also be used over small culverts or pipe openings where there is a requirement for debris filtration.

What is the main purpose of a trash grate?

The primary purpose of a trash grate is to act as a filter, screening out debris. This ensures that any unwanted pollutants such as coarse silt, leaf litter or rubbish are prevented from entering and polluting the stormwater system and connected waterways.

What does the “clear opening” measurement mean?

The clear opening refers to the size of the open space or void beneath a cover or grate, and typically matches the internal size of the pit chamber below. It is the most critical dimension when ordering pit covers.

Access covers and grates are usually larger than the clear opening size in order to sufficiently cover the pit beneath. It is important to note that any dimensions in the product descriptions typically refer to the nominal clear opening, not the external dimensions of the cover or grate itself. For specific product dimensions, SVC can provide technical datasheets or product drawings for accuracy.
