Frequently asked questions

Is a VicRoads kerb lintel different from a standard council lintel?

Yes, VicRoads kerb lintels have their own dimensional and structural requirements that typically differ from those used by local councils. For example, the rebate behind the kerb lintel is typically 70-100mm deep for council kerb lintels, but is 125mm deep for VicRoads kerb lintels.

Ensuring you use the correctly specified product is essential - contact the SVC team if you require assistance with your specification.

Are SVC’s kerb lintels accepted for use on VicRoads-owned roads?

Yes - SVC offers a number of VicRoads-specific kerb lintels that are manufactured in compliance with VicRoads Standard Drawings, making them the approved product for these applications.

Applicable Standard Drawings include: SD 1061 / 1271 / 1272 / 1281 / 1282 / 1301 / 1321 / 1322

How do I know which kerb lintel I need?

To confirm which kerb lintel is required for your project, best practice is to consult the asset owner. Local councils and VicRoads have publicly available standard drawings that denote the specific dimensions and requirements of kerb lintels to be used in their jurisdiction.

If the kerb lintel is being used in an off-road or privately-owned project and does not require compliance with council or VicRoads, customers can select whichever option is best suited for their project.

Variations in kerb lintels include the overall length of the unit, the width of the throat opening, the kerbing profile (B or SM-type), and whether it has legs or is a beam only.

How is a property inlet installed?

The precast block is installed flush with the finished ground level directly above the underground connection point, providing a permanent and visible reference point for the life of the property.

Are these required by the local council?

Many councils and water authorities require property inlets to be installed as part of a new subdivision's construction, as it provides a clear and consistent method for marking these important assets.

What exactly does a property inlet mark?

It typically marks the 'tapping' or connection point where a property's private sewer or stormwater drain connects to the council or water authority's main line, usually at the property boundary.

What is the brass plaque for?

The brass plaque is cast into the top and contains a small, precise centre point. Surveyors place their instruments directly on this point to take their measurements with a high degree of accuracy.

What is a permanent survey mark used for?

It is a fixed, stable monument installed by a licensed surveyor that serves as a reliable reference point for all future surveys, ensuring property boundaries and infrastructure locations are accurately maintained.

Are kerb grates compliant with VicRoads or EDCM standards?

SVC's range of kerb, gully and V grates are bike-safe and manufactured in compliance with AS 3996:2019 in Load Class D, making them applicable for safe, compliant usage in various municipalities. Certain kerb grates (B2, SM2 and SM2 modified) are accepted for use in EDCM applications (i.e. new growth areas and subdivisions).

Standard kerb grates are not suitable for VicRoads applications. Please refer to our VicRoads Grates page for DTP-compliant grates designed to suit the specifications of VicRoads SD 1322, 1411, 1431 and 1441.

Can you make a custom-sized pipe grille?

Yes. In addition to our range of standard sizes designed to fit common pipe diameters, we can fabricate custom pipe grilles to suit unique or non-standard pit or outlet dimensions for your project. These can be made with access hatches as required.

Are SVC pipe grilles lockable?

SVC's standard pipe grilles are designed to be bolted directly over the pit or outlet, with no opening mechanism or allowance for access.

Custom pipe grilles for applications requiring maintenance access can be produced with hinged boltdown hatches, which secures them against unauthorised access while allowing authorised personnel to open them for maintenance.

Where are pipe grilles typically installed?

Pipe grilles are commonly used in Melbourne Water applications on overflow pits, where water overflow from ponds and catchments is redirected into the drainage system to prevent flooding.

They may also be installed over stormwater outlets at the discharge point where stormwater empties into a creek, river, or open drainage channel.
