Concrete Pits
A concrete pit is an essential product for civil infrastructure, used Australia-wide as a key component of drainage infrastructure, electrical networks and utility systems. Concrete pit structures provide versatile, reliable solutions in various urban or industrial settings, providing a robust enclosure that can be used efficiently across stormwater, power and data cabling applications.
Compared to pits poured in-situ, precast pits offer superior performance thanks to their increased strength, durability and resistance to harsh conditions. Precast pits are manufactured in a controlled factory environment and rapidly delivered to site only when required, allowing efficient installation and long-lasting quality.
SVC Civil is a leading Australian manufacturer of high-quality concrete pits, offering industry-compliant, customisable products that meet the needs of civil, commercial, and residential projects. Whether it’s a standard stormwater pit, custom-made drainage pit or large-format cabling pit for road and rail infrastructure, SVC’s precast pits provide dependable solutions that withstand Australia’s demanding environments.

Concrete Pits: Stormwater, Electrical, Cable, & More
Though they are made from the same material, precast concrete pits for stormwater and cabling applications differ in design.
The requirements for concrete stormwater pits are typically specified by the asset owner. Some councils accept standardised precast concrete pits with wall knockouts, while other councils require pits to be custom-made with specific pipe penetrations. Depending on the installation site, concrete drainage pits may vary in depth from 450mm up to 4500mm. Regardless of size, all SVC stormwater pits comply with the AS/NZS Plumbing and Drainage Code.
Concrete electrical pits and cable pits do not have knockouts, instead featuring solid walls at full thickness. Concrete cabling pits are typically no more than 1200mm deep, and size varies from 600×600 up to larger-format sizes such as 3000×3000. Concrete cable pits by SVC can be made to suit VicRoads or VicTrack compliance requirements.

A wide range of standard pit sizes are available, suitable for most drainage applications.
Download Our Pit Lifting Guidelines
When handling or transporting any precast pit, it is essential that the correct lifting methodology is used for safe and efficient installation. Due to the sheer weight of precast concrete products, there is a risk of product damage if the incorrect lifting tools or techniques are applied, which could result in significant cost and time outlays.
SVC has prepared a helpful guide with detailed instructions regarding the proper practices for handling and transportation of our precast stormwater pits. By following these guidelines, customers can avoid project delays and achieve safe, timely completion.
Custom Concrete Pit Solutions
Custom-made concrete pits are another area of SVC’s expertise, where we support our customers with tailored pit solutions that are ready to install once on-site. Custom stormwater pits are made to order in virtually any size, with specific pipe penetrations cast in during the manufacturing process.
SVC’s custom pits are produced following a consultative shop drawing approval process to ensure they satisfy all client criteria. Our specialist Civil team are experienced in the manufacture of pits for major infrastructure projects, meeting the stringent compliance requirements of VicRoads (DTP), VicTrack and 300LA.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. What types of precast concrete pits do you offer?
We manufacture a comprehensive range of precast concrete pits to suit various civil and infrastructure applications, including:
- Stock Pits & Risers: Standard knockout pits for stormwater infrastructure.
- Solid Wall Pits: For electrical and communications cabling applications.
- Made-to-Order Stormwater Pits: Custom-manufactured to specific dimensions with precast holes for easy pipe installation.
- Catch Pits: An easy-install solution designed to capture road runoff from the kerb channel.
- VicRoads Pits: Robust precast concrete pits for major road infrastructure, produced with thicker pit walls, a higher-strength concrete mix and compliant with BTN 033.
- Custom Cabling Pits: Large-format cabling pits for electrical, communications, and data applications.
- Subsurface Pits: For S1 and S2 pit applications as specified by VicRoads.
- Trade Waste Pits & Risers: Multiple options for trade waste applications such as cooling and straining, grease interceptors, and petrol & oil interceptors.
- Dual Chamber Pit: A versatile solution for stormwater detention, effectively controlling stormwater outflow during extreme weather events.
2. What are the advantages of precast concrete pits over in-situ pits?
Precast concrete pits offer several advantages over pits poured on-site:
- Superior Strength and Durability: Manufactured in a controlled factory environment, precast pits have stronger compressive strength than pits poured in-situ, making them more resistant to harsh conditions.
- Time-Saving: Precast pits are delivered to the site ready for drop-in installation, which significantly reduces construction time in comparison to pits poured on-site, which require longer lead times for construction of formwork and the pouring, setting and curing of concrete.
- Quality Assurance: Factory production ensures consistent quality and compliance with industry standards. Quality control processes effectively identify any defects prior to the pits leaving the factory, ensuring only compliant, high-quality products are dispatched to the project site.
- Cost-Effective: Reduced installation time and labour costs make precast pits a more economical choice in the long run.
3. Are your concrete pits compliant with industry standards?
Yes, all standard concrete pits are manufactured in compliance with the National Building and Plumbing code. SVC is also accredited by a VicRoads-qualified engineering authority for the supply of precast concrete pits for use in DTP projects, ensuring their compliant application in major road infrastructure. Similarly, SVC offers made-to-order pits that are compliant with 300LA or CAR requirements, which are required for rail infrastructure projects.
4. Can you manufacture custom concrete pits?
Yes, SVC specialises in custom-made stormwater and cabling pits. We can manufacture pits to specific dimensions and include precast holes for pipes or bellmouths for cabling conduits, helping to reduce precious installation time on-site for contractors.
5. What is the typical depth range for your concrete pits?
The depth of our concrete pits varies depending on the application:
- Stormwater Pits: Can range from 450mm to 4500mm deep with the use of pit risers or extensions.
- Cabling Pits: Typically no more than 1200mm deep, with sizes ranging from 600x600 up to 3000x3000.
6. Do your pits come with pre-installed step irons?
Yes. For safety and convenience, all SVC pit risers and pit bases deeper than 1000mm, in the sizes 900x600 and above, are pre-fitted with step irons, a time-saving feature which reduces installation time on-site.
