Managed by VicRoads, the Bolte Bridge is a large, twin cantilever road bridge in Melbourne that provides an important connection between the Tullamarine Freeway and the West Gate Freeway.
When existing covers on the Bolte Bridge began to fail, a durable, long-term cover alternative was urgently required for reparation works, to maintain the integrity and safety of this critical piece of road infrastructure. SVC was approached to provide a replacement solution for the existing units, that needed to provide reliable performance under exposure to heavy vehicle loading while ensuring full compliance with VicRoads specifications and Australian Standards.
After assessing the site conditions and the reason for failure of the previously installed assets (note: these were not supplied by SVC), SVC’s recommended solution was to supply Class D ductile iron access covers, built to withstand a higher load capacity than the previous non-compliant polymeric covers and enabling pit access for authorised maintenance crews. These would safely accommodate the traffic movements over the bridge while withstanding harsh environmental conditions. Designed with precision and manufactured for longevity, the ductile iron access covers offer improved safety, durability and accessibility.
This project reflects SVC’s industry expertise and continued commitment to providing robust civil infrastructure solutions for Victoria’s most important transport assets. Whether it’s for metropolitan roads, bridges, or major transport corridors, SVC remains a trusted partner for tailored access and drainage solutions.
