Victoria’s Big Build saw the delivery of two new railway stations – Bell and Preston – and the removal of four level crossings, as part of the Mernda Line Level Crossing Removal Project. Elevating the rail line over the roads on the Mernda line, the 2km overhead rail bridge would significantly reduce traffic congestion and increase pedestrian safety while delivering new open space for locals to enjoy.

An extensive project commencing with site investigation in 2017, the project moved through various stages including design, engineering and community consultation prior to construction. Once construction commenced in 2020, SVC was commissioned to supply multiple bespoke concrete pits and concrete-encased multi-part access covers, produced in compliance with VicTrack specifications.

As construction of the new train stations progressed in 2021-2022, SVC was engaged once again to contribute architectural concrete seating modules for the landscaping and urban works. A collaboration between Wood Marsh Architecture and Tract Consultants, the design of the buildings and surrounding precincts at Bell and Preston Stations differ significantly, with each station developing its own distinct character.

At Bell, the station façade reflects the post-war roof forms of the surrounding residences, and the concrete furniture dispersed throughout the open space features a striking imprinted detail weaving across the concrete seat bases. At Preston, the vibrance and colour of the station building draws a direct connection with the energy and activity of the neighbouring Preston Markets. Concrete seating in the Preston precinct features beautiful cantilevered seat tops with a bold exposed aggregate, supported by tapered charcoal concrete seat bases providing stability.

With the four level crossings now removed, premium new railway stations operating like clockwork and pedestrians now able to move through and interact with the open green spaces, the Bell-Preston LXRP project is a success story that can be enjoyed for generations to come.
