Step Irons

Included in All SVC Pit Risers, Providing Safe and Compliant Access

Description

Step irons are a vital safety accessory, providing secure, permanent ladder rungs for personnel requiring access to deep stormwater pits and other underground utility chambers. They are engineered to solve the critical OHS challenge of ensuring safe and compliant entry into confined spaces.

SVC pit risers in all depths and SVC pit bases over 1m deep (sized 900×600 and above) are supplied with step irons pre-installed in the pit walls, significantly reducing labour and installation time on-site. Extra step irons can be supplied loose upon request.

Manufactured with a high visibility, corrosion-proof yellow polymer and a high-strength steel core, SVC step irons are built to last in the harsh, damp environments of underground infrastructure. As a fundamental component for any deep pit or manhole installation, they guarantee a safe access system for long periods of maintenance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I purchase step irons to retrofit an existing pit?

Yes, SVC can also supply loose step irons for contractors wanting to install ladder access points in existing pits or pits formed on-site.

How are step irons installed in a precast concrete pit?

Installing step irons requires the pre-drilling of holes, sized to match the step leg (28mm dia) and positioned 375mm apart (centre to centre). The holes must be drilled perpendicular to the pit wall. After cleaning out any debris from the holes, position the step legs over the holes and tap the step iron into place using a mallet, making sure to alternate taps at each end of the step and not on the middle span of the step.

Bonus: When purchasing pit bases and pit risers from SVC, the installation of step irons is no longer a concern for contractors! Our manufacturing process includes the installation of step irons directly into the pit or riser wall, eliminating this step for busy civil contractors. The step irons are set at standard intervals to form a compliant ladder system that can be used as soon as the pit is delivered.

Do SVC Step Irons meet Australian Standards?

Yes, our step irons are designed and manufactured in compliance with the requirements of Australian Standard 1657:2018 for fixed ladder systems, ensuring they are safe and compliant for use in all civil and municipal assets.
