Multi-Part Covers

Modular Access Systems for Large Underground Pits, Chambers and Trenches

Description

Multi-Part Access Covers are an engineered system designed to provide safe and reliable access over large underground openings in stormwater, sewer, electrical and communications applications. This modular system, consisting of removable support beams and individual infill covers, solves the challenge of covering large transformer pits, valve chambers, and trench runs. Used extensively in major infrastructure and rail projects, our multi-part systems provide robust, compliant access over significant spans while allowing for full, unobstructed entry for maintenance when the beams are removed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are multi-part covers watertight?

Typically, our standard multi-part covers are gas-tight and also considered water-tight. For sensitive applications specifically requiring a higher degree of water or gas tightness, specialised sealed designs can be engineered. Please specify this requirement at the time of enquiry.

What is the largest pit opening that can be covered with a multi-part cover?

Multi-part access covers are highly configurable and can be designed to span many metres. Based on our current capabilities, SVC can produce multi-part covers to suit a maximum length of 6100mm and a maximum span of 3250mm.

How does a multi-part access system work?

The system uses a fixed outer frame and removable support beams that lock into position. Smaller, individual cover panels are then placed on the beams to complete the surface, allowing sequential removal.

What does the “clear opening” measurement mean?

The clear opening refers to the size of the open space or void beneath a cover or grate, and typically matches the internal size of the pit chamber below. It is the most critical dimension when ordering pit covers.

Access covers and grates are usually larger than the clear opening size in order to sufficiently cover the pit beneath. It is important to note that any dimensions in the product descriptions typically refer to the nominal clear opening, not the external dimensions of the cover or grate itself. For specific product dimensions, SVC can provide technical datasheets or product drawings for accuracy.

Are ductile iron covers suitable for main roads and highways?

Absolutely! SVC can supply ductile iron access covers and multi-part covers rated to Class D, E, and G, which are specifically designed, tested, and approved to withstand the loading requirements of highway and main road traffic. While we also supply ductile iron access covers with a Class B load rating, these are not compatible for road installation and should only be used in driveways or behind-kerb applications where they are suitable for slow-moving domestic traffic.

What is the advantage of ductile iron over older grey cast iron?

Ductile iron is significantly stronger and less brittle than traditional cast iron. This allows for more efficient designs with higher load ratings and a far greater resistance to cracking under repetitive traffic loads, increasing the durability and longevity of these heavy-duty access covers in the built environment.
