Kerb, Gully & V Grates

Robust Grates for Effective Roadside and Kerbside Drainage

Description

SVC’s range of Kerb, Gully, and Dished Channel V-Grates are heavy-duty steel grating solutions specifically designed for installation within roadside kerb and channel drainage systems. They solve the critical problem of efficiently removing large volumes of water from road surfaces, preventing flooding and improving traffic safety.

Designed to be compatible with standard barrier-type and semi-mountable concrete kerbing profiles, these grates provide a seamless, effective inlet for stormwater, with forgebar and weaved grating patterns both available. Manufactured from durable, heavy-duty galvanised steel, they are compliant with AS 3996:2019 in Load Class D, certifying their compliant use in council roads and major carriageways.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can kerb grates be retrofitted into an existing kerb and channel?

Yes, SVC's B2, SM2 and SM2 modified grates can be easily retrofitted into existing kerbing installations. The process involves the contractor cutting out a section of the existing kerb and channel, and either pouring a new concrete surround to house the kerb grate and frame, or putting the encased grate into place and sealing the joints with the concrete on either side.

Are kerb grates compliant with VicRoads or EDCM standards?

SVC's range of kerb, gully and V grates are bike-safe and manufactured in compliance with AS 3996:2019 in Load Class D, making them applicable for safe, compliant usage in various municipalities. Certain kerb grates (B2, SM2 and SM2 modified) are accepted for use in EDCM applications (i.e. new growth areas and subdivisions).

Standard kerb grates are not suitable for VicRoads applications. Please refer to our VicRoads Grates page for DTP-compliant grates designed to suit the specifications of VicRoads SD 1322, 1411, 1431 and 1441.

What is the difference between a gully grate and a V-grate?

A gully grate is a square or rectangular flat grate that is installed within the kerb channel, on top of a drainage pit where it captures stormwater runoff from the road.

A V-grate, or dished channel grate, is composed of two sloped grate sections that create a V-shape profile. It is suitable for installation in dished crossings or in V-shaped drains.

What does the “clear opening” measurement mean?

The clear opening refers to the size of the open space or void beneath a cover or grate, and typically matches the internal size of the pit chamber below. It is the most critical dimension when ordering pit covers.

Access covers and grates are usually larger than the clear opening size in order to sufficiently cover the pit beneath. It is important to note that any dimensions in the product descriptions typically refer to the nominal clear opening, not the external dimensions of the cover or grate itself. For specific product dimensions, SVC can provide technical datasheets or product drawings for accuracy.
