Flat Stormwater Grates

Durable, Flat Grates for Efficient Surface Water Drainage

Description

SVC Civil’s range of Flat Stormwater Grates provide a versatile, reliable solution for managing surface water in a wide range of civil and commercial applications. They are designed to capture stormwater from pavements, driveways, nature strips and pedestrian areas to prevent ponding and flooding.

All flat grates are supplied as a frame and grate set, where the flat-top profile of the grate is seated flush with the steel frame, ensuring safety and accessibility. Manufactured from heavy-duty galvanized steel, these grates are built to withstand traffic loads and resist corrosion.

SVC can also supply certain popular sizes of our Flat Stormwater Grates pre-encased in concrete, enabling significant cost and time savings for busy contractors. Our range of high-performing, industry-compliant drainage grates provide reliable performance and offer a long-lasting solution for stormwater management.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the openings in SVC’s stormwater grates safe for high-heeled shoes?

In general, the standard forgebar or weaved pattern in SVC's stormwater grating range is rated as bike-safe, meaning bicycle or wheelchair wheels can safely travel over the grate surface without getting caught or stuck. The grate apertures (openings) of bike-safe grating designs are typically too large to safely accommodate high-heeled shoes such as those with a stiletto heel.

In certain applications, pedestrian areas may specify "heel-safe" or "heelproof" grates, which have smaller openings to prevent high heels from getting caught. Out of SVC's stormwater grate offerings, only our Pedestrian-Safe Grates are classed as "heel-safe" and are suitable for high-heeled shoes.

What load class do I need for my driveway?

For a standard residential driveway, a Class B rated grate or cover is sufficient, as Class B loading is suitable for slow-moving domestic traffic.

For commercial driveways or areas with truck traffic, a heavy-duty Class D grate or ductile iron cover is required for safety and compliance.

Where are flat stormwater grates typically used?

Flat stormwater grates are commonly installed over junction pits in various applications such as driveways, carparks, courtyards, nature strips and across pedestrian pathways. Their primary function is to intercept and remove surface water before it can become a hazard or cause property damage.

What does the “clear opening” measurement mean?

The clear opening refers to the size of the open space or void beneath a cover or grate, and typically matches the internal size of the pit chamber below. It is the most critical dimension when ordering pit covers.

Access covers and grates are usually larger than the clear opening size in order to sufficiently cover the pit beneath. It is important to note that any dimensions in the product descriptions typically refer to the nominal clear opening, not the external dimensions of the cover or grate itself. For specific product dimensions, SVC can provide technical datasheets or product drawings for accuracy.
