Dual Chamber Pit

A Low-Maintenance, Set and Forget Solution for On-Site Stormwater Detention

Description

SVC’s Dual Chamber Pit is an integrated, fully contained precast solution designed to streamline onsite stormwater management. During periods of heavy rainfall, the DCP helps to reduce road flooding and pooling around drainage points by slowing and regulating the rate of stormwater discharge from a site. Trusted by councils and contractors alike, this innovative pit system simplifies onsite assembly, enhances flow control and ensures long-term structural integrity in both greenfield and retrofit projects.

Used as a baffle pit or orifice pit, the Dual Chamber Pit’s internal two chambers are separated by a central steel baffle. Stormwater enters the inlet chamber via the grate above, where any carried sediment and debris settles at the base. The clean water passes through a trash grate for further debris screening, then through an orifice plate into the outlet chamber for controlled release.

The versatility of SVC’s Dual Chamber Pit allows customers to customise pit size, cover load rating, baffle positioning, orifice size and trash grate options, enabling an adequate solution to suit most site requirements. The DCP is delivered to site pre-configured and assembled, allowing simple, fast installation. This efficient, space-saving solution is ideal for smaller commercial and residential projects needing to satisfy council drainage and water quality objectives.

Frequently Asked Questions

What covers are available for dual chamber pits?

SVC offers a two-part galvanised steel cover compatible with our 1200x600 and 1200x900 Dual Chamber Pits. One side is a forgebar grate to be placed over the inlet chamber; the other side is the same forgebar grating covered by a 3mm solid chequer plate, to be oriented over the outlet chamber. The grate and cover combination is housed within a steel frame with tie bars to support encasement in concrete.

DCP covers are available in either Class B or Class C load ratings as per AS 3996:2019.

What kind of projects are dual chamber pits suitable for?

Dual Chamber Pits are ideal for smaller commercial sites and residential developments such as townhouse and dual occupancy construction projects, where on-site stormwater detention is necessary due to an increase in hard, non-absorbent surfaces on the site. This ensures that during heavy rain events, stormwater can be released slowly to mitigate flooding and pooling around council drains.

The filtration of sediments and debris also improves the quality of the discharged stormwater, helping to protect downstream waterways.

Is this a stormwater detention (OSD) system?

Yes, SVC's Dual Chamber Pit acts as a self-contained on-site stormwater detention system and can be a component of a broader OSD plan. Its primary function to capture and detain stormwater during heavy rain events, ensuring a controlled stormwater discharge rate that eases the pressure on municipal drainage infrastructure.

An additional benefit of the system is the improvement of water quality due to debris filtration measures incorporated within the unit.

What is the purpose of the two chambers?

The two chambers inside SVC's Dual Chamber Pit are designed for stormwater detention, enabling a controlled rate of stormwater discharge.

The first chamber (stormwater inlet) captures the stormwater and acts as a sediment trap, allowing coarse pollutants and silt to settle at the base. The water then passes through the trash grate and orifice plate in the central baffle, which provide further filtration, into the second chamber (outlet) where the stormwater is released at a more controlled rate.

What equipment is required for lifting this product?

It is crucial that all products are lifted using the appropriate lifting tools and techniques to ensure safe transportation and handling. Due to the sheer weight of precast concrete products, any product failure or failure of incorrect lifting equipment poses a high risk to people nearby.

SVC incorporates steel lifting anchors into our precast concrete products, which are compatible with either 1.3T, 2.5T or 5.0 lifting clutches (depending on product weight). Lifting clutches must be connected to the appropriately load-rated lifting chains. All clutches are available to purchase from SVC.

Note: Some SVC pit products may still include lifting holes, which are compatible with 1.0T lifting hooks. Customers must not use these holes to thread chains through for lifting; this is an incorrect technique and is very dangerous as it creates a high chance of pit wall breakage due to the stress from the chain.
