The Diggers Rest Level Crossing Removal forms part of Victoria’s broader Level Crossing Removal Program, delivered under the Western Program Alliance with McConnell Dowell as the construction partner.
SVC Civil was engaged to provide critical stormwater and drainage infrastructure to support the new rail corridor and associated roadworks, ensuring safe, durable water management around an active transport and rail environment.
Scope of Supply
Working closely with the alliance and site team, SVC supplied a package of VicRoads-compliant drainage items tailored to the project’s rail and roadway interfaces, including:
- Ductile iron access covers (Class-rated and compliant with rail-adjacent and road-traffic applications)
- Kerb lintels to suit drainage transitions and kerbside capture points
- Custom-made stormwater pits compliant with BTN 033 and designed to match project construction requirements
- Stormwater grates to coordinate with pit geometries and hydraulic design.
A key feature of the Diggers Rest package was the need for project-specific pit configurations to manage runoff from track drainage zones and road upgrades. SVC produced multiple pit sizes and depths with 150mm-thick walls and bespoke geometries to match the civil and rail design set-out, enabling efficient installation and long-term performance in these heavy-duty environments.
Product Compliance and Performance
All supplied products were manufactured to meet VicRoads and Department of Transport and Planning expectations, aligning with the product requirements set out in BTN 033. This criteria included appropriate load classes for the environment, product reinforcement, and durability for high-traffic and rail-corridor conditions.
Delivery and Project Coordination
Given the live rail setting and staged roadworks, delivery timing and site coordination were essential. SVC’s project team supported the program through:
- Responsive production scheduling to suit installation windows
- Clear and regular communication with McConnell Dowell and alliance supervisors
- Accurate matching of products to IFC drawings and pit call-ups
- Reliable transport to the Diggers Rest rail corridor site
Outcome
SVC Civil’s stormwater and drainage products helped deliver a safer, flood-resilient rail and road corridor at Diggers Rest. By providing compliant, high-strength precast components, including purpose-built custom pit and grate solutions, SVC supported the Western Program Alliance in achieving streamlined installation, reduced on-site risk and successful project completion.
