Citywide Asphalt faced a significant challenge at their busy North Melbourne plant: debris and contaminants from constant truck movements were being tracked onto Arden Street. With both Melbourne City Council and the EPA calling for action, a swift and effective solution was needed.

SVC worked closely with Tim Ogun from Citywide Asphalt to develop a practical system that would capture the majority of contaminants before they left the site. Several concepts were considered before settling on a robust, easy-to-maintain design.

The final solution features a large rebated concrete slab fitted with a series of 40mm-deep grating panels. These lightweight panels sit flush with the surface to collect tyre debris as trucks pass over, and can be unbolted and lifted out easily for regular cleaning and maintenance.

To manage both debris and stormwater run-off, six SVC 900 x 600 x 600mm standard knockout pits were installed across the driveway. Each pit is covered with a Load Class D Encased Grate and charcoal filtration media to trap fine contaminants. Connected to the main stormwater outfall, this system is expected to capture up to 90% of residual pollutants, helping to protect the broader drainage network.

Thanks to the availability of SVC’s grating and pit products and the streamlined installation process, the entire project was completed over a single weekend with minimal disruption to operations at this high-traffic site.
